A look into beauty, that doesn't harm our furry friends
I’ve been hearing some rumors about the 2014 Valentine’s Day collection hitting Lush stores over in the UK, and I thought I’d take a chance at my local store here in Hong Kong to see if their stock had arrived. Lucky for me, the day I visited was the first day they had the collection out on display! *victory dance* Even though the line is a lot smaller than what was available during the holidays, being the Lushie that I am, I had to check out the new items.
If you’ve been to a Lush, you know how their soap displays are large and in charge. They almost come off as a fine cheese selection, huge slabs with as many scent and color combinations as you can imagine, and then some. For Valentine’s Day, I was completely smitten with the Neon Love soap- the original slab is in the shape of a heart, with yellow writing over the front. As an added bonus, when you cut into the soap, you can see the pattern of smaller white hearts inside- how cute! Usually Lush items come from some sort of inspiration, and from their website I was able to find this: “Inspired by 12 months of Neon Love; a collaborative art installation by artists Victoria Lucas and Richard William Wheater. The installation ran from Valentine’s Day 2011 for a whole year, and featured lyrics from famous love songs brightly lit up in huge neon writing.” How neat! When I first smelled the bar, it was very mild. It doesn’t have as strong of a scent compared to Karma or other Lush favorites- yet I could notice a sweet tinge exuding from it. I was helped by a store associate (thanks Aubrey!! XD), and she worked the soap later over my hands. Once I brought my hands closer for a wiff, I was instantly in love! This is the kind of scent that’s right up my alley, a mild, sweet scent, leaning towards citrusy notes. Nothing like oranges or limes, but rather something in-between a strawberry or a raspberry. Looking at the website again, they describe the scent as “Bergamot and rosewood work together to create a rich scent, whilst fresh figs, passion fruit juice and soya yoghurt nourish and soften the skin. “. Ohhh man, I friggen LOVE fig. I don’t think this scent gets much credit in the perfume world, but no wonder I was so drawn to this mix! Also, the yogurt is probably helping Neon Love come off as a more mild scent. Usually I can’t use the solid soaps at Lush, because it just doesn’t mix well with my body chemistry (I tend to have -really- dry hands), but after having my hands washed and walking out the store, it wasn’t too harsh at all! I think I might have to go back and invest in a generous hunk.
I asked Aubrey what else was new, and she pointed out the shower gel Prince Charming. I took a whiff, and thought it was similar to Neon Love, but it did have some differences. Firstly, because this is a more concentrated form, the smell is definitely a lot more pungent. I believe if you know what pomegranate smells like, this is right up there with that. Rightfully so, being in the middle of the ingredients list. The other citrusy smell is probably thanks to the grapefruit oil, but don’t write off Prince Charming as only a fruity smelling gel. Blending well with the fruity sweetness is the ever-popular vanilla notes, along with marshmallow. No, not the kind of marshmallow that you use in smores, but the actual plant/flower (Althea officianalis, to be exact). The one scent that really keeps it from being completely sweet is Sandalwood. It doesn’t stick out too much, but it does give this gel a unique fragrance!
Next up in the line is the bath bomb Love Locket. You guys, this one is pretty huge. I was told that you can break this up into 3 baths, and I don’t doubt that at all. There is a surprise as this bomb disintegrates, but I won’t ruin it for you XD. Personally, I think the scent leaned more towards the candy-sweet side, almost like a milder version of Sugar Fairy.
There are a few other products I didn’t mention ( Close to You massage bar, which I heard is VERY candy-sweet smelling , Tender is the Night massage bar, which is more of a vanilla/jasmine, and The Kiss lip gloss), but all the more reason to check them out for yourself! I think I might be going back for a piece of that Neon Love, maybe I’ll continue some more quick reviews then? ❤
